With over 77.5 million new GSM connections, HSPA and annual growth of 15% in 2009, GSM increased its margin of leadership in market share over other technologies technology in his role as number 1 in the region.

According to a report of 3G Americas, mobile connections in Latin America exceeded 500 million in the fourth quarter of 2009.

The GSM family of technologies, HSPA comprised 91% of market share in Latin America, with more than 464 million connections informed at the end of 2009.

In 2009, the number of GSM-HSPA subscriptions in Latin America increased by almost 64 million, of which 9.4 million were 3G connections. GSM technology has seen rapid growth in Brazil, with 28 million new connections in 2009.

"Mobility serves over 500 million users in Latin America, where the average wireless penetration already exceeds 86%," stated Erasmo Rojas, 3G Americas director for Latin America and the Caribbean.

In North America GSM-HSPA technology continues to add more subscriptions than any other, with 13.6 million new subscriptions combined over 2009 and 8 million in the fourth quarter alone.

Globally, GSM, HSPA reached 4.17 billion subscriptions or 89% of market share. There are currently over 450 million subscriptions to 3G UMTS-HSPA accounting for 10% of the market for GSM Family of Technologies in 345 commercial networks in 139 countries around the world.

HSPA mobile technology will continue to be the leading broadband for much longer. Informa predicts billion HSPA subscriptions worldwide by mid-2012 and 2 billion by 2015.
